Crossed-out wrong AI Overview snippet above the three steps: thumbs-down report, write the correction, fix the cited sources

Google AI Overview Wrong? How to Report It (and Actually Get It Fixed)

Google’s AI just told the world something wrong. Maybe a fact anyone can disprove in one click, maybe something about your own business: wrong prices, wrong city, “permanently closed” over a shop that’s open right now. And the panel offers no obvious “this is false” button, so the wrongness just sits there, on top of the search results, wearing Google’s voice.

There is a report path, and it works better than its reputation, IF you know two things. First, where it hides: the thumbs-down icon at the bottom of the AI Overview, or the three-dot menu → “Report a problem.” Second, what it is: a feedback queue, not a support ticket. No case number, no reply, and specific corrections written neutrally get reviewed while “this is garbage” gets counted and buried. And when the wrong answer is about YOUR business, reporting is step one of three, because the Overview will keep rebuilding the same mistake from the same sources until the sources change.

Both lanes below: the 60-second report anyone can file, then the owner’s fix.

Report a wrong AI Overview (60 seconds)

1. Find the thumbs-down at the bottom of the AI answer (or the three dots at its top right) → Report a problem
2. Pick the closest category (inaccurate / misleading / harmful)
3. In the text field, write the correction, not the complaint: “The Overview states the business is in [wrong city]. It has been at [address] since 2021, per [source].”
4. Submit. The query and the answer you saw travel with your report automatically.

Multiple reports on the same error carry more weight, so if it’s your business, have a colleague and a friend file the same specific correction.

What happens to your report (the honest version)

Google acknowledges AI Overviews can be inaccurate and reviews this feedback, and specific, repeatable reports do lead to fixes: answers get adjusted, some queries stop showing an Overview at all. What doesn’t happen: a reply, a timeline, or a guarantee. Treat the report as tilting a probability, worth the sixty seconds every time, and never the whole plan when the error costs you money.

When the wrong Overview is about YOUR business

Step 1: trace where the wrongness comes from (10 minutes)

  1. Expand the Overview and open its cited sources, the small link cards. Somewhere in there sits the wrong fact: an old directory, a stale page on your own site, a third-party listing frozen in 2023
  2. Can’t spot it in the citations? Search the wrong fact in quotes with your name (“[business]” “[wrong detail]”); the surviving source shows itself

Step 2: fix the sources, not just the symptom

  1. The Overview is a synthesis; it regenerates from whatever the sources say. Correct your own pages first, then your Business Profile, then request fixes on third-party listings, the full origin-hunt is the same one that cures wrong ChatGPT answers, because it’s the same disease
  2. Then make the correct fact loud: stated plainly on your site, in your profile description, in fresh content. Synthesis follows the weight of evidence

Step 3: escalate the severe cases

  1. A false “permanently closed”, a merged identity with another business, a wrong price actively costing calls: after filing feedback and fixing sources, if two-plus weeks pass unchanged, go through Google Business Profile support directly (help center → contact options). Profile-level disputes get human eyes in a way Overview feedback doesn’t
  2. “Permanently closed” specifically has its own repair path: our closed-label guide walks it

Why there’s no appeal process (and what that tells you)

Google’s position is that Overviews are generated, not published: assembled per query from retrieved sources. That’s why you get a feedback widget instead of a corrections desk, and why the durable fix always lives in the sources. It also means prevention is real: a business whose facts are consistent and current everywhere rarely stars in a wrong Overview, and one page contradiction is sometimes all it takes to star in one. If your brand search shows a competitor instead of an error, that’s a different failure with its own playbook: the brand-hijack fix.

Common questions

How do I report a wrong Google AI Overview?

Use the thumbs-down at the bottom of the AI Overview or the three-dot menu at its top right, choose Report a problem, pick a category, and write the specific correction in the text field. Your search query and the answer shown are attached automatically.

Does reporting an AI Overview actually do anything?

Yes, as a probability: Google reviews the feedback, and specific corrections repeated by multiple users lead to adjusted answers or removed Overviews. There’s no reply or case number, so pair reporting with source fixes when the error matters to you.

What should I write in the report?

The correction, neutrally: what the Overview says, what’s actually true, and where that’s verifiable. “The Overview lists the old address; the business moved to X in 2021, shown on the official site” outperforms “this is wrong” every time.

The AI Overview says my business is closed or lists wrong info. Report or fix?

Both, in order: file the report, then trace the Overview’s cited sources and correct the wrong fact at its origins, your site, your Business Profile, third-party listings. The Overview regenerates from sources, so only source fixes hold.

How long until a wrong AI Overview gets corrected?

Feedback-driven changes have no published timeline; source-driven changes typically show within days to weeks of recrawling. Severe business cases unresolved after a couple of weeks should escalate through Google Business Profile support.

Can I make Google remove the AI Overview from a search entirely?

Not directly, though harmful-content reports sometimes result in an Overview no longer appearing for a query. For your own viewing, adding “-ai” style workarounds doesn’t exist, but the Web filter under search results shows plain links.

Why does the wrong information come back after it was fixed?

A surviving source keeps re-feeding it: a cached page, a duplicate listing, a directory you missed. Re-run the quoted search for the wrong fact and finish the cleanup; regenerated answers follow whatever still stands.

Is this the same problem as ChatGPT saying wrong things about my business?

Same disease, different desk: generative systems synthesize from public sources and offer feedback channels rather than appeals. Fix the sources once and every assistant, Google’s included, inherits the correction on its own schedule.
