You open Google, tap AI Mode, ask a question in English, and the answer comes back in Hebrew. Or Spanish. Or something you can read but did not ask for. So you go looking for the setting that fixes it.
There isn’t one. That is the whole problem, and it is why this page exists.
AI Mode has no language control of its own. It inherits whatever language your Google Search interface is set to, and that setting lives somewhere most people have never opened. Change it and AI Mode changes with it, immediately, on every device you are signed in on.
Here is how to do it, why it happens, and one reason to switch to English even if your own language is supported.
The 30-second fix
Go to google.com/preferences, scroll to Language, pick English, hit Save. Reload AI Mode. Done.
Want to test it before committing? Add &hl=en to the end of any Google URL. Temporary, no settings touched.
Why AI Mode picks the wrong language
Google decides what language to answer you in using a few signals, and the one people assume matters usually doesn’t.
Your browser language? Not it. Your operating system? Not it either. The language you typed the question in? Sometimes, partially, unreliably.
What actually drives it is your Google Search interface language – the setting that controls whether your search buttons say “Search” or something else. If that is set to your local language, AI Mode answers in your local language, no matter what you type into it.
Two things push that setting without you noticing. First, the domain: if you land on google.co.il or google.de instead of google.com, Google assumes the local language. Second, your account: signed in, the setting syncs across every device, so fixing it on your laptop fixes your phone too. Signed out, it is stored per browser as a cookie, which is why it keeps reverting after you clear your history.
How to change AI Mode to English, step by step
On desktop
- Open google.com/preferences
- Find the Language section
- Under “Language used for Google products”, choose English
- Save, then go back to google.com/ai
Still getting the wrong language? You are probably on a country domain. Visit google.com/ncr once – that stands for “no country redirect” and it pins you to google.com.
In the Google app on your phone
- Tap your profile picture, top right
- Open Settings, then Language & region
- Set Search language to English
The app keeps its own setting. Changing it in your browser will not change it here, which catches a lot of people out.
The temporary trick
Type your search, then add &hl=en to the end of the address bar and press enter. English for that session only. Useful when you are on someone else’s computer, or you just want to check whether the language setting really is the culprit before you go changing things.
How to change the AI Overview language too
Same family, different feature: AI Overviews are the summary boxes at the top of normal search results, and people hit the same wall with them, an Overview in the wrong language and no setting anywhere inside it.
Same cause, same fix. AI Overviews follow your Google Search interface language, exactly like AI Mode does. Change the language at google.com/preferences and both switch together. There is no separate AI Overview language setting to find, and there’s one extra wrinkle worth knowing:
- The query language matters more here. Overviews lean on the language you typed. Ask in English on an English interface and the Overview comes back English almost every time; a mixed setup (local interface, English query) is what produces the weird half-and-half results.
- Country domains override harder. On google.de or google.co.il, Overviews often stay local even after a settings change. The google.com/ncr trick from above fixes that too.
- No Overview at all in English? Coverage differs by language. Some queries trigger an Overview in English that simply do not have one in smaller languages yet, so switching can make Overviews appear where you never saw them.
One reason to use English even if your language works fine
AI Mode runs two models. There is a fast one that handles most questions, and there is Gemini 3 Pro, which does the heavy reasoning and the generative layouts.
Gemini 3 Pro in AI Mode is available in English only. Not in the other ninety-odd languages. English.
So if you have been using AI Mode in your own language and finding it shallow, that may not be the language quality. It may be that you have never had access to the better model. Switch to English, select “Pro” from the model menu in the Ask anything bar, and it is a noticeably different product.
Worth knowing: Pro has daily limits, and you need to be signed in to a personal Google account you manage yourself. Work accounts often won’t have it.
Is AI Mode free?
Yes. AI Mode itself costs nothing and needs no subscription. The fast model is free for everyone in a supported country. Gemini 3 Pro inside AI Mode is also free but capped daily, and a Google AI plan raises the cap. You do not need to pay to use AI Mode in English.
Which languages AI Mode actually supports
Close to a hundred now, after a run of expansions through late 2025. Arabic, Hebrew, French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Russian, Turkish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Polish, Greek, Swahili, Yoruba, Zulu, and a long list beyond that. It is live in over 200 countries and territories.
Which means if AI Mode is answering you in the wrong language, it is almost never a coverage gap. It is a settings problem, and the fix is the one at the top of this page.
If it still won’t switch
You changed it but nothing happened. Hard refresh the page. Google caches the interface aggressively and the old language can hang around for a few minutes.
It reverts every few days. You are signed out. The setting is a cookie, and it dies whenever you clear browsing data. Sign in and it sticks to the account instead.
Desktop is English, phone isn’t. The Google app stores its language separately. Fix it in the app settings, not the browser.
You get web links instead of an AI answer. Not a language issue. AI Mode falls back to plain results when it isn’t confident enough in an AI response. Rephrase the question with more detail and it usually comes back.
Why this matters if you run a business
Everything above is a user problem. There is a business version of it that almost nobody has thought about yet.
AI Mode answers in the language of the person asking. It pulls those answers from web content, and it heavily favors content in that same language. So a customer searching in Spanish for what you sell is getting an AI answer built from Spanish-language sources, and if everything on your site is in English, you are not in the pool it draws from.
For most local businesses that is fine, because your customers search in your language. But if you serve a market where people search in two languages, you are currently visible in one of them. That gap is going to matter more, not less.
The mechanics of getting cited in the first place are the same either way. We covered them in how to get cited by AI and in showing up in AI Overviews. If you want the background on AI Mode as a product rather than a settings problem, start with what Google AI Mode is.
Common questions
How do I get Google AI Mode in English?
Change your Google Search interface language at google.com/preferences to English and save. AI Mode follows that setting. For a one-off, add &hl=en to the Google URL.
Is there a language setting inside AI Mode itself?
No. AI Mode has no separate language control. It uses your Google Search language setting, which is why people cannot find the option – they are looking inside AI Mode for something that lives in Search settings.
Is Google AI Mode free?
Yes. AI Mode is free in every supported country and needs no subscription. Gemini 3 Pro inside AI Mode is also free but has daily usage limits, which a paid Google AI plan increases.
Why does AI Mode answer in a different language than I typed?
Because your Search interface language, not your typed query, decides the response language. A local Google domain like google.co.uk or google.de can also force it. Visit google.com/ncr to stop the country redirect.
Does changing the language on my computer change it on my phone?
Only if you are signed in to the same Google account in a browser. The Google mobile app keeps its own language setting under Settings, then Language and region, and you have to change that one separately.
How many languages does AI Mode support?
Close to a hundred, across more than 200 countries and territories, following a series of expansions through 2025. Gemini 3 Pro within AI Mode remains English-only.
How do I change the AI Overview language?
The same way as AI Mode: AI Overviews have no setting of their own and follow your Google Search interface language from google.com/preferences. Type the query in your target language too, and use google.com/ncr if a country domain keeps forcing the local language.
