Search mockup where a fully expanded AI Overview with an Ask Anything box fills the screen and organic results sit below labeled the basement, beside the stats on external links, People Also Ask and CTR

AI Overviews Now Open Fully Expanded. The Ten Blue Links Moved Downstairs.

On August 27, SEO consultant Chris Long posted a screenshot with the caption “Holy moly SEOs.” A day later Google confirmed what he’d spotted: AI Overviews can now open fully expanded, a complete AI-Mode-style answer, “Show more” button gone, an “Ask anything” box loaded and waiting, for queries where Google’s systems “determine it’s most useful.”

I’ve been reproducing it since, and the desktop version is genuinely startling: ask Google to define or explain almost anything and the answer fills the entire first screen. The organic results, the ten blue links, your ranking, exist downstairs now, reachable by scroll, like a basement with good lighting.

Barry Schwartz’s confirmation piece carries the Google statements; Search VP Robby Stein called it testing and tuning. Fine. But zoom out two months and “test” undersells what’s assembling in plain sight.

Before and after search mockups showing the AI Overview going from a snippet with Show More to a fully expanded answer with Ask Anything and organic pushed down, beside the stats 26 percent external links, 97 percent of PAA as AIOs, 58 percent CTR cut

Three moves, one direction

May’s I/O merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one continuous experience. August 19, AI Mode’s generative UI, those custom calculators and interactive tools, started flowing into Overviews for the 2.5-billion-user surface. August 28, the auto-expansion. And through September, observers caught anchor links INSIDE Overview answers that open AI Mode sessions rather than webpages, documented by Search Engine Journal, alongside sponsored text links being tested inside AI Mode itself.

Name the pattern honestly: AI Overviews is becoming AI Mode’s front porch. The snippet was a preview of the web; the expanded Overview is a destination with the web as its appendix. The “Ask anything” box completes it: every follow-up question stays inside, becoming an AI Mode conversation instead of a second chance for your blue link.

The numbers around this

26% of AIO answers now carry external links in the text, way up since late August (Peec AI), more citations, into a bigger answer 97% of People Also Ask answers are now AI Overviews, per AlsoAsked’s 19M-answer sample 58% CTR reduction at position 1 under an AIO, Ahrefs, measured BEFORE expansion

Hold the last two together: the 58% click haircut was the collapsed-snippet era, and expansion pushes organic further down while answering more completely. Nobody has post-expansion CTR data yet; the direction of the bet isn’t mysterious.

What quietly died in August

Three habits, all respectable last year. Optimizing to “win the collapsed snippet,” those first two visible lines, when the collapsed state itself is disappearing for affected queries. Treating above-the-fold organic as a realistic goal for definitional and informational terms; on expanded queries, there is no above-the-fold organic. And reading “we’re in the AI Overview” as automatically good news without asking WHERE: a citation inside the expanded answer is visibility, while position 4 beneath it is archaeology.

The honest edges (before anyone panics)

This is a confirmed test, not a completed rollout: expansion hits some queries (definitions and explainers most reliably, in my checking), some users, and Google tunes it weekly. Commercial and local queries still largely render the classic page. And more external links inside answers is a real countercurrent; Google needs the web fed. So the move isn’t to torch your strategy; it’s to find out, per money keyword, which Google your buyers actually see, which nobody can tell you from a ranking report.

The five moves that matter now

  1. Audit your money keywords for expansion state. Incognito, twice a week, three states per keyword: no AIO, collapsed, expanded. The expanded list is where your CTR assumptions are already fiction
  2. Chase the citation, not the position, on expanded queries. Passage-level answers in the first two sentences, the craft from the AIO playbook, because inside the answer is the only above-the-fold left there
  3. Own the follow-ups. That “Ask anything” box turns every expanded Overview into the start of an AI Mode session, which fans out into sub-questions; pages answering the obvious NEXT questions get cited in round two. Map them per topic: cost, duration, alternatives, “is it worth it”
  4. Re-baseline reporting on impressions-with-citations. Search Console’s Generative AI report is now the primary chart for affected queries; clicks are the lagging indicator of a shrinking surface
  5. Check where your “links” actually go. With AI-Mode anchor links appearing inside answers, verify your citations open YOUR page; presence in the answer and traffic from the answer are now separable facts

The strategic read

Google spent 2025 asking whether users wanted AI answers; 2026 is Google deciding they do and rebuilding the front page accordingly, one default at a time: merged surfaces, generative UI, auto-expansion, in-answer links that loop back into AI Mode. For businesses the conclusion hasn’t changed since the first Overview shipped, it’s just stopped being optional: the front page became the answer, so being quotable IN the answer is the new position one, and everything feeding that, liftable facts, consistent evidence, crawlable access, is the whole game. The sites that treated citation as a side quest are about to see what the basement looks like.

Common questions

Why did my AI Overview suddenly get huge?

Since August 27-28, 2026, Google auto-expands AI Overviews into full AI-Mode-style answers for queries where its systems judge it useful, removing the Show More button and loading an Ask Anything box. Google confirmed it as a test it’s tuning.

Is the expanded AI Overview the same as AI Mode?

Functionally it’s AI Mode’s answer style embedded at the top of normal results, and the Ask Anything box hands follow-ups to AI Mode proper. The surfaces were merged into one continuous experience at I/O in May 2026; expansion makes the merge visible.

Which queries get expanded AI Overviews?

Definitional and explainer queries most reliably, per testing; commercial and local searches still mostly render the classic layout. Google decides per query and keeps tuning, so per-keyword checking beats generalizations.

Do expanded AI Overviews kill organic clicks?

No post-expansion study exists yet; the pre-expansion baseline was a 58% CTR reduction at position 1 under an Overview (Ahrefs), and expansion pushes organic further down while answering more fully. Plan for citations carrying more of the load.

Can I turn off expanded AI Overviews for my searches?

No user setting exists; the workarounds are the usual ones, udm=14 as default search or results-cleaning extensions, covered in our turn-off guide. Site owners separately have the Search Console exclusion toggle.

How do I get cited inside the expanded answer?

Same machinery as regular Overviews, with higher stakes: one question per page, the answer in the first two sentences, consistent verifiable facts, crawlers allowed, and coverage of the follow-up questions the Ask Anything box invites.

Do links inside AI Overviews still send traffic?

External links in answers actually rose to about 26% of Overviews, so yes, citations can send clicks; but Google is also testing anchor links that open AI Mode instead of a webpage, so verify where your specific citations lead.
