Google now has two AI answer systems living in the same search box, they look like cousins, and almost everyone, including people writing about them professionally, mixes them up. One is the paragraph that appears on top of your results without being asked. The other is a separate tab you enter on purpose and talk to. Different triggers, different depth, different rules, and if you run a business, different games to win.
The clean split: AI Overviews happens TO your search; AI Mode is a place you GO. Everything else follows from that one sentence. Side by side first, then each one in plain words.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An AI summary placed on top of regular search results | A separate conversational tab inside Google Search |
| How it appears | Automatically, when Google decides the query suits it | Only when you click the AI Mode tab or go to google.com/ai |
| Can you ask follow-ups? | No, it’s one-shot; a new search starts over | Yes, it’s a conversation with memory of the thread |
| Depth | A few sentences with source links | Long, organized answers; comparisons, tables, plans |
| Where you’ll meet it | Roughly half of searches open with one | Over a billion users, but only the ones who click in |
| Requirements | None, shows signed out too | Signed-in personal account, 18+, supported language |
| Can you turn it off? | No real off switch; the Web filter hides it per search | Nothing to turn off, it never starts unless you open it |
| Links behave like | Classic results still sit below the box | Sources are citations inside the answer |
AI Overviews in one minute
You search “why is my basil dying,” and above the ten blue links sits a generated paragraph: likely causes, a care tip or two, small source cards. That’s an AI Overview. You didn’t request it, you can’t reliably prevent it, and on many questions it ends the search right there, which is why around 60% of searches now finish without any click. For searchers it’s a convenience with occasional howlers; for websites it’s the new front door: being cited in that box is the visibility, since the box sits on top of everything you ranked for. When it gets facts wrong there’s a report path, and when you’d rather not see it at all, the Web filter exists, covered in the off-switch guide.
AI Mode in one minute
Next to All, Images and News sits a tab called AI Mode (missing for some people, for six fixable reasons). Click it and search becomes a conversation: ask a messy multi-part question, get an organized answer, push back, refine, compare, and it remembers the thread. Under the hood it runs query fan-out, splitting your question into dozens of hidden sub-searches and assembling the best passages into one cited answer, the mechanics our AI Mode explainer unpacks. It’s Google’s answer to ChatGPT, living inside the search box, and it only ever activates by your hand.
The 10-second test to tell them apart
Did you click anything to summon it? No → AI Overview. Are you in a chat that remembers your last question? Yes → AI Mode. That’s the entire taxonomy, and you now outrank most tech journalists on it.
Why the confusion is so universal
Because they share a brain and a look: both run on Gemini models, both cite sources in similar cards, and Google links them (an Overview sometimes offers to continue in AI Mode, handing your question across). Add that both arrived within a year of each other and that headlines say “Google AI” for either, and the blur is understandable. The functional difference stays sharp though: one is a feature OF the results page, one replaces the results page.
If you own a business: which one should you care about?
Both, for different jobs, and here’s the honest split from watching our own numbers. AI Overviews is reach: it fires on half of searches, your customers see it whether they chose to or not, and a citation there is mass visibility, the game of the AIO playbook. AI Mode is depth: fewer entrants, but they’re asking buying-grade questions (“compare X and Y for a small office,” “who’s good with old buildings near me”) and the answers argue and recommend. The useful news: both are fed by the same structured, liftable, evidence-backed pages, so one content strategy serves both fronts. You don’t pick a lane; you publish for the fan-out and collect on both.
Common questions
What’s the difference between AI Mode and AI Overviews?
AI Overviews is the automatic AI summary placed on top of regular search results; AI Mode is a separate conversational tab you open deliberately, with follow-ups and thread memory. One happens to your search, the other is a destination.
Is AI Mode just a bigger AI Overview?
No. Overviews are one-shot summaries above normal results; AI Mode is a dialogue that decomposes complex questions into many sub-searches and builds organized, long-form answers. They share underlying models, not behavior.
Why do I see AI Overviews but have no AI Mode tab?
Overviews require nothing and appear even signed out; AI Mode needs a signed-in personal account, an adult account, a supported language and your rollout wave. Missing-tab causes and fixes are a separate checklist.
Can I turn off AI Overviews or AI Mode?
AI Mode needs no turning off, it never starts by itself. Overviews have no official off switch; Google’s Web filter (the udm=14 view) shows plain results without the box.
Do AI Overviews and AI Mode give the same answer?
Often overlapping but not identical: the Overview compresses to a few sentences while AI Mode’s fan-out digs through more sub-questions and cites more passages. Testing both on a question about your own business is a revealing five minutes.
Which sends websites more traffic?
Neither is generous: Overviews satisfy many searches with zero clicks, and AI Mode cites rather than lists. The visible upside is citation impressions, now measurable in Search Console’s Generative AI report, where being the quoted source becomes the new ranking.
Is ChatGPT more like AI Mode or AI Overviews?
AI Mode: conversational, follow-ups, synthesized answers. The two of them are direct competitors, and their differences for business visibility get a full comparison in our ChatGPT vs AI Mode breakdown.
