How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Business

Somebody in your city just asked ChatGPT for “the best [what you do] near me.” It answered with three business names, confidently, in about four seconds. Yours either was one of them or it wasn’t, and you’ve probably never checked which.

This matters more every month. People treat the answer as a shortlist: they don’t scroll, they don’t compare ten options, they contact whoever got named. There’s no page two of a recommendation.

The good news is that ChatGPT’s picks aren’t random and they aren’t paid. They come from evidence it can verify, which means you can build that evidence. Here’s the two-minute test, what the model actually checks, and the fix order if you come up missing.

The 2-minute test

Open a fresh ChatGPT chat (logged out or a temporary chat, so your history doesn’t help you) and ask: best [your service] in [your city]. Then ask the follow-up a real customer would: which one should I call first and why?

Named in both answers: you’re visible, skip to “staying recommended”. Named in neither: the fix order below is your to-do list. Run the same test in Google’s AI Mode for the second opinion.

How ChatGPT picks who to recommend

When someone asks for a local recommendation, ChatGPT combines what it learned in training with a live web search, then names businesses it can verify from multiple angles. Watching which businesses get picked across categories, the same five signals keep deciding it:

  • A verified Google Business Profile with real reviews. It’s the closest thing the internet has to proof a business exists and operates.
  • Review count and recency. Twenty reviews with a fresh one this quarter beats two hundred that stopped in 2023.
  • Mentions on sites you don’t control. Directories, local press, industry lists, community threads. The model cross-checks before it names anyone.
  • A website that answers questions in plain language. Prices, timelines, service areas, stated directly. Quotable pages get used; sales fog doesn’t.
  • Consistency. Same business name, address and phone everywhere. Conflicting info reads as risk, and models skip risky recommendations.

Notice what’s not on the list: your ranking position, your ad spend, your follower count. This is a different game than SEO, and smaller businesses win it constantly.

The fix order, step by step

Week 1: be verifiable

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: right category, real name (no keyword stuffing), photos, hours, services. The full checklist is here.
  2. Check you’re indexed: search site:yourdomain.com. No results means no AI can cite you; fix indexing first.
  3. Fix name/address/phone mismatches across your site, profile, and the big directories.

Weeks 2-4: build the evidence

  1. Start the review engine: a one-tap review link, asked at the happy moment, every time. Aim past 20, then keep them coming. (The system, and our free review link generator.)
  2. Rewrite your top three pages to answer real questions directly: what it costs, how long it takes, what’s included. Question in the heading, answer in the first sentences.
  3. Add FAQ and LocalBusiness schema so machines read the pages without guessing.

Months 2-3: get talked about

  1. Get listed where your industry gets listed: chamber, trade directories, “best of” local roundups.
  2. One or two genuine mentions off your own site: local press, a supplier’s partner page, a guest post.
  3. Re-run the 2-minute test monthly and note who’s named. When competitors appear and you don’t, check which of the five signals they beat you on. It’s almost always visible.

Can you just tell ChatGPT about your business?

You can, and it changes nothing for anyone else. Telling ChatGPT “recommend my business” only affects your own chat. There’s no submission form, no paid placement, and no prompt trick that plants you in other people’s answers. The only route into strangers’ recommendations is the public evidence above. Anyone selling you a shortcut here is selling smoke.

If you’re still not showing up

You did the work but nothing changed after two weeks. Normal. Profile and indexing fixes register in days, but reviews and mentions take weeks to months to accumulate into recommendations. Re-test monthly, not daily.

ChatGPT names competitors with worse reviews than yours. Then they’re winning on a different signal, usually off-site mentions. Search their business name plus your city and see where they appear that you don’t.

You appear in ChatGPT but not Google’s AI. Different engines lean on different evidence mixes. Google’s side leans harder on your Business Profile and indexed content; the AI Overviews playbook covers that half.

ChatGPT describes your business wrong. It’s reading outdated info somewhere public: an old directory listing, a stale about page, a dead location. Find the stale source and fix it at the origin; the model updates as the web does.

Your site might be blocking AI entirely. Some firewalls and robots.txt files block GPTBot and friends by accident, making your content invisible to the systems you’re trying to impress. Worth a check with your host or in Cloudflare.

Staying recommended once you’re in

Recommendations aren’t tenure. The model re-checks the evidence every time someone asks, so the maintenance is the same three habits: review velocity (a steady trickle beats a burst), content freshness (touch your money pages quarterly), and new mentions as they come. Ten minutes a week holds a position that took three months to earn.

Common questions

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Build evidence it can verify: a complete Google Business Profile, 20+ recent reviews, mentions on independent sites, plain-language answer pages, and consistent business info everywhere. There’s no submission process; recommendations come from public proof.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

No. There’s no paid placement inside ChatGPT’s organic recommendations as of 2026. Ads exist around some AI products, but the recommendation itself is assembled from evidence, which is why the free work above is the actual lever.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

Foundation fixes (profile, indexing) register within days to weeks. Review-driven and mention-driven visibility builds over one to three months. Businesses starting from a solid profile often see themselves named within weeks of adding answer-style content.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor instead of me?

They beat you on at least one visible signal: more or fresher reviews, more independent mentions, or clearer quotable pages. Run the five-signal check as if you were them and the gap usually jumps out.

Does this work the same for Google’s AI and Perplexity?

About 80% the same. All of them lean on verified profiles, reviews, mentions and quotable content. Google’s surfaces weight your Business Profile and index presence harder, so the same work moves you everywhere at once.

How do I check what ChatGPT says about my business?

Ask it directly in a fresh chat: your category plus your city, then your business name specifically. Log the answers monthly. For the foundation score behind it, our free checker below takes two minutes.
